Contaminated fish back in local rivers
Several specimen of Atlantic salmon with symptoms of fungus disease was caught in Tuloma and Kola rivers, reported the Fishing Association to SeverPost. The contaminated specimen were given to veterinarians and further sent for clinical and epizootological analysis.
“It’s yet early to assert, though high likely that the disease symptoms are those of last year. The fish must have recently entered the rivers from the sea for spawning,” told SeverPost one of the fishermen.
According to him, the fish has migrated from the sea, thus the idea of rivers as the source of contamination appears to have no support. Though parasitic fungus is just the consequence while the real epidemic origins remain undiscovered.
“The fish enters the rivers being sluggish and already affected which is very sad, since during the year we’ve made no headway in discovering the reason of our Atlantic salmon’s contamination,” the Agency’s interlocutor said.
At the meeting of the anti- epizootological commission that took place in the premises of the regional government on Tuesday, the vice-governor Alexey Tyukavin assumed that the contamination might be caused by properties of the Kola Bay water. It was though decided not yet to prohibit sport fishing in the rivers of Kola and Tuloma.
The local decision makers and the regulatory authorities recognized that they have no ideas of what the desease and its origins are. A representative of the Barents and the White Seas department of the Russian Federal Fisheries Agency noted that the available data was sent to the Institute of Expert Virology and the Diagnostic and Prevention Research Institute for Human and Animal Diseases. The researchers have tentatively announced that the disease is not a virus, though are still unsure of the diagnosis.
“This year the problem returned three weeks earlier than last year. This is probably due to the fact that summer 2015 was cold. This time the situation will develop faster,” warned the Head of the Murmansk Fisheries Agency Andrey Merenkov.
The mass disease of salmon was found out in July 2015. Experts of the Murmansk Fisheries Agency found contaminated specimen with white spots covering scale, fins and head. Later there were lots of sluggish or dead salmon specimen found in local rivers.
