The first patrol ice-breaker laid down in Saint-Petersburg

The first patrol ice-breaker “Ivan Papanin” (project 23550) built under the order of the RF Navy was laid down on April, 19 at the Admiralty Shipyards, informed the press-service of the enterprise.  

In 2016 the RF Ministry of Defense ordered the Admiralty Shipyards to build two ice-class patrol ice-breakers (project 23550) that should be handed over to the Ministry by the end of 2020. The patrol ice-breakers are designed to put together the properties of a tug, an ice-breaker and a patrol boat. The new vessels shall be capable of breaking ice 1.5 m of  thickness.  

Also under the order of the Ministry of Defense the Admiralty Shipyards build a diesel electric ice-breaker “Ilia Muromets” that is to be commissioned this year.

The Ministry of Defense informed that after the dock and state sea trials the ice-breaker will join the Northern Fleet to perform its mission in the Arctic.
