Russia and Norway celebrate the 72nd anniversary of the victory over fascism
On October 23 Russia and Norway celebrated the 72nd anniversary of the defeat of German forces in the Arctic. Governor of the Murmansk region Marina Kovtun, Chairman of the Murmansk Regional Duma Sergey Dubovoy and the Chief Federal Inspector on the Murmansk region Andrey Kalinin congratulated the northerners on the great event.

For us who live in the North this date is as important and significant as the Victory Day. 72 years ago the Karelian and the Northern Fleets’ forces fighting in the Murmansk region launched an offensive against Nazi, drove the enemy from the Kola Peninsula and liberated northern areas of Norway from occupation.
The Petsamo-Kirkenes offensive known as the 10th Stalin’s blow is historically remarkable as one of the most elaborated and efficient military operations of the Great Patriotic War. Though it was preceded by the 3 long and hard years of heroic defense of the Arctic. The enemy couldn’t jump over the helping hand extended to our native land through the North Atlantic, the Murmansk port and the railway. Those were the years of bloody fight at the front lines and savage bombing that nearly wiped off Murmansk from the face of the Earth. Those were years of severe deprivation and incredible heroism of both fighters at the front lines and homefront workers.
Murmansk withstood the war, though the victory was hard-won. Even years after the Kola land keeps on returning the remains of its fallen defenders. Only during the current year remains of over 100 soviet soldiers were found in the Murmansk region and buried with military honors. They gave their lives for our right to life, and we will never forget it.
Today we thank the war veterans for their courage that let us live in piece on our homeland.
