Yesterday the new 15 km long bypass highway along Murmansk has been officially set in operation in Murmansk. Shortly before the 100-year anniversary of Murmansk the new four-lane highway with the traffic capacity exceeding 20 thousand cars per day is now available here.

The official opening ceremony was attended by the Chairman of the State Duma Sergey Naryshkin, the Minister of Transport Maxim Sokolov, the Governor of the Murmansk region Marina Kovtun and the Head of the Federal Road Agency Roman Starovoyt.

“Development of strategically important northern regions of Russia requires regular expansion and reconstruction of the current traffic network that would meet the highest quality standards,” told Sergey Naryshkin.

The Minister of Transport Maxim Sokolov underlined that the road construction shall be the key infrastructure aspect of the Murmansk Transport Hub project.

“This is not just 15 km of new highway, but convenience and safety for drivers,” told Maxim Sokolov.

According to the press-service of the Regional Government, the new highway became the first road of the highest category in the region. To ensure traffic safety the oncoming lanes are separated by special barrier. The highway includes three transport junctions, 14 bridges and cross-overs and an overhead pedestrian crossing and has floodlights over its entire length. The new highway is designed to lessen the traffic burden in Murmansk and will secure safe driving.

The project had been implemented since July 2013 in the frames of the Federal target programme “Development of the Russian transport network for 2010-2020”.

According to the Russian Road Agency, out of 554 km of federal roads in the Murmansk region more than 86% (481) now meet regulatory requirements. That is 15% higher than the national average. In 2016 the federal funding on road facilities in the Murmansk region was 4,5 bln rubles.
